Ambush at Ostima – Death of chieftain Pavlos Kyrou
Short Description:
Pavlos Kyrou was born in the village of Zelovo (now Andartiko) in Florina and was a Slavic speaker. He participated in the Macedonian Struggle from an early age as a henchman of the chieftain Kottas Christou and later took part in battles and commanded his own armed corps. Together with his fellow fighter Dimitrios Dalipis, they became one of the most important collaborators of the Greek Macedonian Committee in the wider area of Korestia. On the night of November 19, 1906, the chieftain was killed in an ambush set up by Bulgarian Komitadjis as he was passing in front of the fountain in the square of the village of Ostima (now Trigono).
Detailed Description:
By the early autumn months of 1906, it was evident that the Ottoman army had increased the frequency and intensity of its pursuit of armed groups of Greek Macedonian fighters. In order to avoid clashes with the numerically superior Ottoman army, the Macedonian fighters formed small groups and did not stay in the same place for long periods of time.
Η 19η November 19, 1906 was a sad day for the Macedonian struggle and especially for the struggle in the area of Korestia. On that day, two important chieftains, Dimitrios Dalipis and Pavlos Kyrou, as well as men who participated in their armed corps, fell in battle. The first casualty occurred in the small armed corps of Dimitrios Dalipis, which, on its way to the Little Prespa, was confronted by a strong group of Ottoman soldiers. A battle ensued, during which four Macedonian fighters were killed, while the rest managed to escape. Chief Dalipis, although wounded, managed to escape the pursuit of the Ottoman forces, but while crossing Pervali he was ambushed and murdered by Komitadji.
Pavlos Kyrou was one of the most important chieftains and one of the pioneers of Macedonian fighters. He was born in the village of Zelovo (now Andartiko) in Florina and was a Slavic speaker. He participated in the Macedonian struggle at a very young age, as one of the followers of the chieftain Kottas Christou (1860-1905). After the death of Captain Kottas, Pavlos Kyrou collaborated with important chieftains such as Efthimios Kaoudis and Pavlos Melas. Apart from his excellent knowledge of the wider Korestia region, Kyrou had important contacts in most of the villages of the area. He also had experience in guerrilla warfare tactics, being the grandson of the old "thief" of the area, Naoumi Kyrou. From the spring of 1906, he operated with his own armed corps in the greater Korestias area, often with his fellow fighter and fellow Slavophone chieftain, Dimitrios Dalipis. As for his death, published accounts are confusing, giving different versions of the date, place, and circumstances of his death. Similar confusion can be found in the sources that refer to the death of Dimitrios Dalipis.
