On May 7, 1907, Lieutenants Zacharias Papadas (also known as Captain Foufas) and Gregorios Falireas (also known as Captain Zakas) decided to invade Paleochori Kozani. Their armed corps consisted of a total of 60 men (35 of Captain Foufas and 25 of Zakas). The plan was to divide the corps into two parts and attack two parts of the village simultaneously. The Macedonian fighters arrived around 10 a.m. and entered Paleochori with the help of local guides.

Captain Foufas and fifteen other men made their way to the house of the Exarchist brothers Kyris, where about ten men armed with Gras rifles were holed up. Despite the numerical superiority of Foufas' armed corps, the building the Macedonians were attacking was well protected, being built of stone and surrounded by a stone wall. There were also many small windows in the basement of the house that served as battlements.

The Exarchist fire from inside the house mortally wounded two of Captain Fufa's men. Faced with the loss of his two comrades-in-arms, the enraged lieutenant decided to attack the house and burn it to the ground. However, as he approached his target, an enemy bullet struck him in the forehead and killed him. During the firefight, two more men from Fufa's armed corps lost their lives, bringing the death toll to five.

Captain Zakas rallied the surviving Macedonian fighters and organized a retreat after learning of Foufa's death and realizing the gravity of the situation. He then led the troops safely to Vogatsiko to regroup.

In honor of the sacrifice of Lieutenant Zacharias Papadas, the Greek state renamed the village of "Paleochori" to "Foufas" by presidential decree on November 27, 1932 (Government Gazette Issue 421, Vol. B΄, 02.12.1932).^ης Νοεμβρίου 1932 (Φ.Ε.Κ. 421, τ. Β΄, 02.12.1932).
